Urgent Prayer Request
My older sister is about seven-months along with her third child, Alexander. Doctors discovered a cyst developing in the area of Alex's stomach. Today we received an update on Alex's situation, here is part of my sister's email:

Note: Both my sister and my brother-in-law are RNs.

So the doctors think Alex has something called a choledochtal (ko-lee-do-k-tal) cyst which is a cyst that grows off of the gall bladder, liver, and/or the common bile duct (used to dump enzymes from the pancreas and gall bladder into the small intestines to help digest food). They are unable to fully confirm this from the ultrasounds, but the placement is right, and they aren't sure which specific structure it might be growing off of, they won't know this unless the cyst starts to dilate the common bile duct or until they do an ultrasound to him after he's born. Depending on the ultrasound and the flow of enzymes they may decide to take him immediately into surgery and remove the cyst and common bile duct, reconstructing it with a section of small intestine, this would require a stay for him in the NICU while he recovers. The good news is that everything I've read says that neonates (newborns) do better with this surgery than older infants (over 6 months old)–but its scary. If it doesn't interfere with digestion and has no impact on the enzyme production, they may chose just to watch it and see if it goes away on its own.

Please remember my sister and little Alex in your prayers during this difficult time, that either the cyst will be nothing or that the necessary surgery after birth will be successful. We are all very worried.
